Small Business Storage

Looking for a combination of local and cloud storage?  Netgear has a lineup that is a great fit for small businesses. With their pro line of devices which start at about $700 for the desktop units, you can store 2 – 12TB of data locally.  You can also back this up to the cloud with their service or create your own cloud.   The desktop units come prepopulated with drives.

These units can be the local backup or local storage. Of course backups need to get off site as well. These units can be backed in one of several ways.  With an external hard drive, you can backup 2TB of data for about $200.  The jobs must be setup.  The drives purchased and then rotated off site on a regular basis.  This is the most economical and the most work.

Option two is a service from NetGear called ReadyNas Vault.  You purchase the account from ReadyNas Vault site.  You then enable the service on your device.  Then you configure your device with a folder that is replicated to the cloud. In this case the cloud is Amazon S3 storage.  You are then charged per GB for storage.  The plans range from 5GB for $5.95 a month, 50GB for $19.95 a month, 100GB for $349 per year and up with a discount for each increment.  A terabyte would be $3049 per year.  100GB is included with the device.   This is the most secure option with your backups being replicated to several secure data centers.

Option three is to purchase another ReadyNas device and plug it into a network at another location that is connected to the Internet.  You can then use ReadyNas Replicate to duplicate data from the production device to the remote device.  Each device would need the Replicate license which is $200.  The total cost for this setup would be about $1800.   If you go over 300GB per year, this setup would save money over the cloud option.  It may not be as secure as the Vault option since the remote location is likely to be closer to the source and not in a secure data center.
